A reckless policeman is cryogenically frozen in prison, after a job goes wrong. He is awoken 40 years in the future after an also-frozen criminal manages to escape and wreak havoc on a population now unused to crime.
If you can get past the 90s cheese and the annoying nods to the camera, Demolition Man paints an interesting picture of a fascist dystopia. The surveillance culture, dominance of brands and constant fear of offending people is eerily accurate 25 years on. All that’s missing is the constant dopamine hit of likes on social media.
As a film I can’t say this really clicked with me, but as a wild guess as to what the future might hold, Demolition Man is ageing disturbingly well.
