Breakfast at Tiffany’s

It’s been a good while since I saw this, but it holds up in spite of Mickey Rooney.
What strikes me this time is that Edwards’ film almost smuggles its central theme into the story. You sort of have to read between the lines that Holly is a sex worker with a horrible past, but it’s so important to understand the character. Hepburn is brilliant at being flighty and funny while hiding a pain within that she’ll probably never let go of.
As the film wraps up there is an emotional pay-off and that wonderful scene with George Peppard in the rain, but it ends so abruptly as to make you question whether it’s just a fleeting moment like all the others in her life.
It’s definitely not the perfect screenplay and is often a bit stilted, but it’s a great character study in the guise of a rom-com. Sometimes one performance is enough to lift something above what it otherwise could have been.
