The Sheffield Pork Sandwich Tour: Ralph Thicketts
This one was a bit of a hit and run, I was in the area and remembered that the butcher’s shop on Sharrow Vale Road did pork sandwiches. So like some sort of pork pervert I ate my sandwich in Endcliffe park and tried to slyly take photos of it without looking weird. It went really well and I am 100% a normal person.
Back in the day the king of the hill here used to be Roney’s, but that sadly closed down a couple of years ago.
This one isn’t a terrible successor to the throne. However, it’s only round the corner from the popular sandwich place Woody’s1 so it’s got some competition.
In that regard it perhaps falls a little short. The pork had really good flavour but was quite rough cut and slightly on the dry side. The stuffing and apple sauce were just right but the crackling was too chewy and tough.
As ever the breadcake was right on the money - everyone in town seems to get this right.
It’s hard to recommend this over Woody’s just for a sandwich but Thicketts is a great butchers that caters to a slightly different crowd. They are friendly people and if you want a quick bite to go along with picking up some pork chops for dinner you could do a lot worse.
Two fucking years I’ve been writing these now what the fuck is wrong with me
