The Hangover

This isn’t the real Caesar’s Palace is it?

Is anyone actually watching The Hangover in 2024? Me! I am! I was in a cabin in Wales and they had it in the (weirdly quite good) pile of DVDs. We wanted something stupid to watch and I was really curious to see how well this has aged.

I remember at the time this was a massive hit, and I found it funny but not hilarious - well that hasn’t really changed. The funniest stuff is dialogue heavy rather than physical comedy, and that’s probably due to the solid lead performances and smart casting of support actors.

What has aged is stuff like the needle-drop music montages, they don’t really make much sense or add much to the film. Plus all the women are really lazily written, either whiny girlfriends or a hooker with a heart of gold.

Still, the premise of some hungover Sherlocks trying to piece together what happened on a crazy night out is a good one, and for that it still gets half a thumbs up from me.
