The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden

Five years ago, we came to make an Eden on these shores.
28 October 2024

A documentary about a couple who settled on a remote island in the Galapagos in the 1930s, who were then joined by another couple and a mysterious Baroness. A series of unexplained disappearances ensued.

Here we have a sober assembly of interviews and dramatic diary readings that tells a deeply weird and interesting tale. There’s some real restraint shown in the edit - it’s a crazy story full of larger than life characters that most importantly (and somewhat miraculously) is chock full of source material. Not only diaries from the settlers, but also loads of pictures and video of them on the island itself.

There’s a bit of padding - from the last remaining residents of the island (some of the couples’ kids), and from people who experienced a similar life on a neighbouring island and in some cases encountered the subjects of the film. Some of these contemporary accounts work, some do not, and the film is already quite long.

Successfully creeped me out.
