Chickens in the Shadows

Send a Guinness to the bathroom and let me know when we’re on.

Toasters N Moose (Estelle Piper, Tom Shaw) are a pop duo from 1970s, reunited to tour the cafes, launderettes, open mic nights and sidewalks of California.

An extreme low-budget mockumentary that borrows a lot from Christopher Guest, but does find its own deep and weird groove. The couple bounce between whatever venue their manager can scrounge for them, putting on bleak show after bleak show to the backing track of whatever is on their Casio keyboard.

It strikes me that when apart both musicians seem more talented than when they are together. Also the scene with a rock band that only does Chopin covers (and therefore defers entirely to their pianist) is hilarious.

In fact, fuck it, the whole movie is hilarious.

You can watch it for free on YouTube1 and it won’t take you long to figure out if it’s your thing. It was my thing.
