The Sheffield Pork Sandwich Tour: McKay’s Kitchen

05 August 2024

Whoa we’re back quick this time. I was down on the Moor so took the chance to try another offering from the food hall there.

McKays Kitchen

First a bit of house-keeping, the previous place we tried in the market, Sallies1, seems to have changed name and maybe changed hands. I have alerted the Michelin guide.

Today we’re at one a few doors down, McKay’s Kitchen, and I have to admit it was difficult not to go to the excellent Hungry Buddha for some Nepalese food but I am above all a public servant so here I am.

A McKays pork sandwich

McKay’s is well known for its free roast potatoes. They are a nice touch. They looked beautiful, but weren’t as crispy as they might seem. I’m not a roast potato reviewer what do I know.

What’s the main event like? Well, a good soft breadcake (butter instead of dripping) with a pretty even balance of pork to stuffing to apple sauce to crackling. It all tasted good.

The pork itself is cut medium-thick and was fall-apart tender (they even struggle to slice it) but to my surprise, just a little dry. It might have been slightly over-cooked so maybe I got there slightly too late in the day.

Inside a McKays pork sandwich

At £4 you could do a lot worse, but this is another situation where the other offerings at the cafe looked more appealing than the pork sandwich. The English breakfasts in particular looked really good.

Price: £4
Address: The Moor Market, The Moor, Sheffield, S1 4PF
