The Sheffield Pork Sandwich Tour: Roses the Bakers
Sorry for the long break in service here but, you know, it’s nice to keep my arteries flowing at least somewhat normally.
Today we’re looking at a very well known place in Sheffield, Roses the Bakers. Like all good bakers around here a pork sandwich is of course on offer, but I don’t hear much talk of it at the pork sandwich council AGM. Their normal sandwiches and bread etc seem to be more popular.
Also, perhaps a bit like Beres, your mileage may vary because Roses has branches all over the city and I can’t guarantee the quality is the same shop-to-shop.
But this one from Crosspool really sings, boys.
It’s medium-to-chunky cut pork but so so fucking succulent, and really fantastic depth of flavour. Kind of the opposite take on Beres’ wafer thin cuts, but just as satisfying.
The breadcake isn’t quite as soft and cloud-like as some but it’s fresh, tastes great and gets the job done.
The crackling is on the chunkier side but is crispy rather than tough. The apple sauce is thick and tasty.
It’s all very well seasoned but be aware that they don’t seem to dunk the breadcakes in dripping. That makes it a bit less salty, and perhaps a bit less umami-ey, but for some people this might be a positive.
What strikes me about this one is how all the individual ingredients really stand out. Where something like Beres is a whole orchestra playing together, this one is just mind-bending solo after solo.
Have I written too much about pork sandwiches at this point? Of course I fucking have but I’ve committed and dammit I’m gonna hit every place in this city if it kills me (which is quite likely).
