The Egyptian
08 October 2018
The memoirs of a fictional doctor, Sinuhe, who lived in ancient Egypt and witnessed the civilisation at its peak along with its decline following the death of Amenhotep III.
This is a novel of truly epic proportions. The Egyptian is not the easiest read, it’s long and Waltari’s prose is often dense and meandering, but it rewards the reader with a rich portrait of a man’s life. He uses accurate historical detail not to show off but to create a tangible world for his character to live in.
Absolutely worth your time and effort.
